Luca Laurenti, director of the “RIAS – Robust and Intelligent Autonomous Systems” R&D Lab.
The development of the Research & Development Labs at the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry (AI4I) moves forward. Luca Laurenti, from Umbria, Italy (born in 1989), has been appointed director of the RIAS – Robust and Intelligent Autonomous Systems R&D Lab, further expanding the institute’s network at the intersection of advanced AI research and industrial applications.
Laurenti earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Oxford and is currently a tenure-track assistant professor at the Delft Centre for Systems and Control at TU Delft, where he will maintain a joint position while leading the new unit. His academic path, shaped between Oxford and Delft, combines expertise in stochastic systems, control theory, formal methods, and machine learning.
His research focuses on data-driven autonomous systems that are provably robust to interactions with dynamic and uncertain environments. To achieve this, RIAS will leverage machine learning, control theory, Bayesian learning, and stochastic optimization, with two main research thrusts: Safe and Robust Machine Learning Methods and Control, Planning, and Uncertainty Propagation. Application areas will include autonomous driving, robotic systems, and additive manufacturing.
With this appointment, AI4I further consolidates its scientific network and confirms Turin as an innovation hub and an attractive destination for global talent. In the coming weeks, the appointed directors will take full charge of their laboratories, launching the operational research phase.
The infrastructure of the R&D Labs is progressing, with the goal of completing by 2026 a network that integrates advanced AI with real-world industrial applications.
