In July 2025 AI4I launched the AI for Advanced Materials & Engineering Design (AMED) Lab, led by Dr. Marco Maurizi. The Lab is one of the Institute’s new Research & Development Units, created to advance foundational research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, physics-based modelling, and metamaterials design.

With the announcement of two postdoctoral researcher positions, the Lab is now entering a new phase of growth. This call confirms AI4I’s strategy to progressively populate its Labs with highly selective professional profiles, in line with its mission to strengthen the role of AI in industry through advanced scientific research.

Each position is tied to one of AMED’s two flagship research areas:

  • Physics-Informed Generative AI for Architected Materials – focusing on generative models such as graph neural networks, diffusion models, and transformer architectures to design micro-architected materials with complex functionalities, embedding physics priors and manufacturing constraints directly into the design process.
  • Machine Learning-Guided Design of Programmable Intelligent Metamaterials – targeting adaptive systems with integrated sensing, actuation, and control, developed through ML-based design strategies and hybrid workflows that combine machine learning, symbolic priors, and large language models.

Both projects provide broad research scope, encouraging candidates to propose specific directions that will be further developed in close collaboration with Dr. Maurizi. The work will include simulation, prototyping, and experimental validation, carried out with the support of partner laboratories at UC Berkeley and the Polytechnic of Milan.

AI4I is looking for talented and motivated postdoctoral researchers with expertise in applied AI, mechanics, or materials science, a strong publication record, and experience with modern deep learning frameworks and computational modelling. Creativity, scientific rigour, and a collaborative spirit are essential.

The positions offer an initial one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal, competitive salary and travel support, tailored mentoring, and the opportunity to contribute to high-impact publications while developing leadership skills in proposal writing and PhD supervision.
