The Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) has launched an international selection process for the appointment of its Director. Applications are open until 15 November 2026.
AI4I has opened the international selection for its Director, who will lead the Institute’s scientific, technological and organisational development and contribute to strengthening its role within the Italian and European artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Based in Turin, AI4I operates at the intersection of advanced AI research, engineering and technology transfer, with a focus on the development and adoption of artificial intelligence for industrial applications. The Institute works within a broad network of research institutions, companies and innovation organisations in Italy and Europe.
The role
In accordance with AI4I’s Statute, the Director will develop the Institute’s Annual and Long-term Strategic Plan for submission to the competent governing bodies and will be responsible for its implementation once approved.
Working with the President and the Institute’s existing organisation, the Director will lead AI4I’s research, engineering and technology-transfer activities, oversee the development of scientific and technical talent and manage the Institute’s priorities and resources.
A central part of the mandate will be to connect scientific research with industrial needs and engineering challenges, supporting the development, validation and deployment of AI solutions in areas including advanced manufacturing, robotics and automation, energy and infrastructure.
The Director will also contribute to the development of partnerships with companies, public institutions and national and European innovation organisations, as well as to business development, technology transfer, the diversification of funding sources and interdisciplinary education and training activities.
An international search
The selection is open to candidates with experience in research institutions, universities, industry, consultancy, public institutions or technology-transfer organisations.
Candidates will be assessed on their experience in leading complex organisations; their knowledge of AI research and technology; their ability to coordinate high-quality, high-impact research addressing industrial and engineering challenges; their experience in building partnerships and innovation networks; and their ability to secure and manage significant funding and resources.
The Director will be appointed for a three-year term, renewable, with an internationally competitive remuneration package.
Selection process and applications
The selection will be conducted by an independent Search Committee, including a representative of AI4I’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), with the support of an international executive search firm. The SAB will provide an advisory assessment of the scientific and technological credentials of shortlisted candidates. The final appointment will be made by AI4I’s Supervisory Board.
