AI Foundry “Peano”, the advanced computing infrastructure of the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I), has entered the TOP500, the international ranking of the world’s 500 most powerful supercomputers. The achievement was officially announced on 23 June 2026 during ISC High Performance 2026 in Hamburg, Europe’s leading conference on high-performance computing.

Peano ranks 315th in the 67th edition of the TOP500 with an HPL benchmark performance of 4.53 Pflop/s, the international reference used to measure scientific computing performance. The infrastructure has also entered the HPCG (High Performance Conjugate Gradient) ranking, widely regarded as one of the most representative benchmarks for real-world scientific and industrial workloads, placing 101st worldwide with a performance of 82.6337 Tflop/s.

Built for AI and High Performance Computing
Beyond its position in the rankings, the result highlights Peano’s ability to combine artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads within a single infrastructure. The benchmarks were achieved by orchestrating 148 NVIDIA H200 and B200 GPUs, combining two different technology generations optimised for HPC and AI respectively. Delivering HPL and HPCG performance on such a heterogeneous architecture required extensive engineering across the entire hardware and software stack. “Peano’s entry into the TOP500 is a major achievement for AI4I and for Italy’s artificial intelligence ecosystem,” said Fabio Pammolli, President of AI4I. “This international recognition validates our technological choices and strengthens our vision of an infrastructure where artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and technology transfer come together to support research and industry.”

Where AI meets supercomputing
Peano has been designed to support scientific computing, numerical simulations, AI model training, inference, industrial development and technology transfer within a unified computing platform. “The result demonstrates that infrastructures designed to support AI and high-performance computing simultaneously can achieve world-class performance when hardware, software and engineering are developed as a single integrated system,” said Riccardo Di Maria, Head of HPC/AI and Engineering at AI4I and Head of AI Foundry Peano.

Recognition ahead of its official launch
The achievement is particularly significant because it comes before the public presentation of the infrastructure. AI Foundry Peano will be officially unveiled on 16 July 2026 at OGR Tech in Turin during the event “PEANO. The AI Foundry of the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I)”, dedicated to the strategic role of advanced computing infrastructures in industrial competitiveness and European technological sovereignty. With its entry into both the TOP500 and HPCG rankings, Peano begins its operational journey as one of Europe’s most advanced infrastructures designed from the outset to integrate artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
