CALL - April 2026

Research Fellow – Generative AI for AI-Enabled and Life Engineering Systems

Deadline: June 30, 2026

The Italian Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) invites applications for a research fellow position in Generative AI for AI-Enabled and Life Engineering Systems.

The IDeaLS Lab at AI4I, Italy’s national AI center, is seeking a highly motivated research fellow with a strong background in AI, Software Engineering, or Computational Life Sciences. The candidate will conduct research on Generative AI models, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and foundation models, for AI-enabled cyber-physical systems (CPS) and life engineering applications. The work will focus on adaptive, explainable, and reliable AI pipelines that enhance automation, decision-making, and scientific discovery.

The Role
As a research fellow, you will explore generative AI approaches to designing, simulating, and controlling AI-enabled systems, including robotics, CPS, and life engineering platforms. You will develop software engineering frameworks and MLOps pipelines to integrate generative AI models safely and efficiently into real-world systems, bridging the gap between AI innovation and practical deployment. For strong performers, there is the opportunity to apply for a formal PhD program, funded by AI4I and in collaboration with a prestigious Italian university.

Your Responsibilities

  • Research the use of generative AI (LLMs, diffusion models, and foundation models) for AI-enabled systems and life engineering applications.
  • Design and implement adaptive software pipelines and MLOps workflows for deploying generative AI in complex systems.
  • Conduct simulation and experimental studies, validating AI models on CPS, robotics, or life engineering tasks.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, AI researchers, and domain experts in life sciences or industrial applications.
  • Contribute to academic publications in AI, Software Engineering, and interdisciplinary venues.
  • Develop prototypes and demonstrators showing the practical integration of generative AI in industrial or scientific applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, AI, Software Engineering, Computational Life Sciences, or related fields.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or similar languages, with experience in deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
  • Interest in Generative AI, software engineering for AI integration, and AI-enabled systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with LLMs, generative AI models, or foundation models.
  • Knowledge of MLOps, CI/CD, and AI software pipelines.
  • Publications in AI, Software Engineering, or applied computational sciences are a plus.
  • Familiarity with robotics, CPS, or life engineering domains.
  • Experience with HPC or large-scale experimentation pipelines.

What We Offer

  • Work in a pioneering research team at the intersection of software engineering, AI, and generative AI.
  • Opportunities to publish in top-tier AI and software engineering venues and contribute to industrial or scientific research projects.
  • Collaboration with leading industry and scientific partners on applied generative AI systems.
  • Access to state-of-the-art HPC clusters, GPU resources, and experimental platforms.
  • Location at OGR Torino, a vibrant hub for technology, AI, and innovation.

Position Details

  • Expected Start Date: As soon as possible in 2026
  • Location: Turin, Italy (on-site)
  • Supervision: Dr. Sebastiano Panichella
  • Affiliation: AI4I – IDeaLS Lab

How to Apply
Please submit a single PDF containing:

  • CV with list of publications
  • Brief research statement (1–2 pages)
